Again working yesterday in Kikoi Outlet, and had one of those days when I felt the need to MAKE something. 

A round in the hardware store  - some mole net, a new staple gun and proper steel cutters and I was all ready for my adventure with the beautiful Luna Design frames perfect for the project!

Remove the glass, cut a suitable piece of the mole net, and staple it to the back of the frame - my kinda 10-minute DIY project ;). And - let me tell you - working with proper tools REALLY makes a difference!

Didn't our new shop display turn out nice? Adding some hooks, this would make a perfect key frame for the hall way, as well. Pretty <3. Actually - initially this idea was planted in my head in the hall way of my cousin, who has a large board for all kinds of notes etc. made like this!

OR - if you are an earring enthusiast, why not get a smaller frame, and make one for yourself? I've got some extra meters of mole net, come by if you would like to get some ;).

Aluperin sain idean serkultani, jolla on eteisessä ISO tällainen kaikennäköistä muistettavaa varten. 

Ja miksei, jos on korvakorujen ystävä, tekisi itselleen tällaista vähän pienemmistäkin kehyksistä? Tai laita tuohon vähän koukkuja, ja tehdä tästä avainten säilytystaulu (onkohan olemassa sanaa 'säilytystaulu'?)

Snowflake gingerbread cookies have been such a big trend this Christmas, just had to try some myself…

And I admit - my mind is so focused on spring and summer already (and next Christmas actually…) that it is VERY hard to keep the Christmas spirits going, so one needs to have these projects with the kids at home after working hours - like making some gingerbread cookies.

Pretty pretty, and simple to make even with the regular flower molds :).

If I got this under a Christmas tree filled with something tiny…I guess I would fall in love all over again.

Here you see another use for my DIY cone garland I wrote about before…feeling very very Christmassy today. Listening to Three Tenors and having my morning coffee, actually surrounded by Petra Lunds Lera products (no kidding, her coffee mug, her candle holder and Ingrid plate under the mandarins on the table) while the kids are watching Disney Christmas cartoons. Peace on earth before we start making the Christmas cards with the kids ;).

Joulusukka ei ehkä voi olla tämän kauniimpi…Cottonhutin joulusukka on käsinneulottu Nepalissa. Ihanat huopapompulat koristavat sen vartta. Aivan mieletön.

Jospa tällaisen saisi joulukuusen alla, ja sisällä olisi jotain ihan pientä…voisipa olla, että sitä rakastuisi ihan uudelleen.

Tässä näette tuon meidän käpygarlandin (mikä ihme tuo on muuten suomeksi?) takan koristeena nyt jouluksi…tänä aamuna on jostain syystä tosi joulunen olo. Kuuntelen kolmea tenoria, aikamme mestareita ja juon aamukahvia…ja tajusin juuri, että olen ympäröinyt itseni Petra Lunds Lera -tuotteilla. Juon kahvia hänen mukistaan, kynttilät pöydällä nököttävät hänen upeassa kynttilänjalassaan (sain siitä juuri eilen positiivista palautetta mieheltäni. Onpas nuo Petran tuotteet kyllä hienoja, tajuaakohan ihmiset, miten hienoja ne oikeastaan onkaan :)! Sanoin, että yritän ottaa kovasti kuvia, mutta ehkä juuri niitä tuotteita, joita pitää käyttää ennenkuin ymmärtää, miten upeita ne ovat.) ja mandariinit ovat pöydällä Ingrid vadilla.

Rauha maanpäällä. Lapset lukevat ja Disneyn joulu-DVD pyörii. Ihana status quo kunnes alamme tämän vuoden joulukorttiprojektin ;). Eilen saatiin jo esimakua….'äiti, miksi sä olet ostanut harmaita kortteja?? Miltä susta olisi tuntunut pikkutyttönä, jos sun äiti olisi ostanut harmaita joulukortteja???' Niin.

Mommy's project this weekend at the summer house...We have dry (even dried...) cones everywhere. Why? Because I've had these plans to make a long, LONG cone garland for about a year. Didn't get it done for last Christmas, but for this Christmas - it will be ready. You'll see it in many photos to come ;).

Tässä vähän kuvia mamiskuukkelin projektista mökillä tänä viikonloppuna. Inhottavaa, kun toi olkapää kiukuttelee vieläkin, niin en pääse kutomaan tai virkkaamaan. Mutta on nämäkin kivoja projekteja :). Meillä on ollut näitä kuivia käpyjä (tai kuivattuja, onnistuu uunissa tai saunan lauteilla 1-2 tunnissa, kokeilkaa, tosin tuoksu ei paras mahdollinen...) vähän joka kaapissa ja ämpärissä mökillä ja kotona, kun on pitänyt tehdä tämä projekti jo viime jouluksi. Mutta nyt se valmistuu, ja tämä käpykoriste varmasti näkyy siellä ja täällä blogissa nyt jouluun asti. Eikö tulekin aika nätti tapaus? Kustannus 2.90, eli tuon rautalangan verran (kieputtele kävyn alimman kerroksen ympäri aina vuorotellen aloittaen ala- ja yläpuolelta). Ei muuten lähde kävyt irti ihan helposti. Sormenpäät tulee vähän helläksi kylläkin.

After receiving only a 2 hr Skype training from Antti Karppinen, 2013 International Portrait Award winning photographer, last Thursday, I think I've accomplished best shots I've ever taken. And I want to thank Antti. Seriously, humbly thank him. Take it from me - he really knows his thing! We were planning to organize a workshop in one of the major cities in Europe during the fall, but that just didn't work out. And everyone being so busy, this was now the best alternative we had at hand before my trip to Kenya on Wednesday (Yes, I am going to see where the Kenana owls are actually being made :)))) !!)

Antti knows I am a visual person, and being that, sometimes forms, textures and colors just jump at you. The exceptions from the rule, they somehow glow. Afterwards you look at the photo taken with your phone or  Ixus, and feel disappointed. With me - almost never I capture the object the way I see it.  I know the camera doesn't take the photos, but perhaps it will help at least a little to have a better one to carry around.

And- you know the feeling when you have a new camera in your hand? Okay, here is the on/off and here I shoot...Antti agreed he will show me 5 things to do with the camera. I can say I have a clue of perhaps 1 so far, after 600 kind of serious shots taken during the past 3 days, but it is a start. I am not allowed to use zoom, which was bit of a challenge when there was 4 walls, a huge pile of wood and all kinds of equipment around, but I thought at least this time the best shots are of the intended objects :).

And oh - about the apple rings! These are just plain. I took out the core, and cut the apples into 1-2 mm thick slices, and had them in 75 C oven for 8 hours. The scent in the house is delicious, but at least my apples sweat, so wipe the oven from inside every hour or so. If the moist is dripping on top of the apples again, the drying is kinda pointless ;).

Yes, I was surprised myself...it REALLY is more about - just get it done, woman!! I got it done. Took a couple of hours in total, and 30 euros. 20 euros for the shelves from Ikea, and 10 euros for the matt black paint and a paint brush.

Itsekin yllätyin, että se TODELLA on kiinni viitseliäisyydestä, eikä rahasta - nyt vaan projektin kimppuun, nainen!! Tehty, pari tuntia ja 30 euroa myöhemmin. 20 euroa käytin hyllyihin Ikeasta, 10 euroa mustaan mattamaaliin ja pensseliin.

Näyttää aika söötiltä ja siistilta, eikö? Kaikenmaailmaiset pikkukehykset - nyt yhdessä onnelliset aina ja ikuisesti.

Do you like crochet carpets? I love them. I was a bit skeptical about the practicality, need to admit, before I got one on our bathroom floor from our wonderful, beautiful crochet queen Salla.  It is there, in front of the shower, and gets wet every day. It dries well, and feels wonderful under the feet. And gets washed every week, and tumble-dried (I have this severe allergy for that dish-cloth smell - if I even sense, it is on it's way somewhere in our house, the object gets to be washed in 60 degrees. No exceptions.). Crochet carpet seems to be getting better every time.

And - aren't these just pretty? The Novita Tube weft is perfect, perfect, perfect. Soft yet strong. We are starting to sell it as soon as we get the product open in the shop, but the Knit Hit Kit carpets are available already in 3 colors - unfortunately the instructions are still only in Finnish.

Tykkäätkö virkatuista matoista? Itse olen ihan rakastunut niihin. Täytyy tunnustaa, että olin vähän skeptinen niiden käytännöllisyydestä ennenkuin sain yhden meidän ihanalta, kauniilta virkkauskuningattarelta Sallalta. Mutta nyt - virkattu matto on tuossa kylppärin lattialla, ja vielä suihkun edessä, ja kastuu ainakin pinnalta joka päivä. Kuivuu hyvin, ja tuntuu ihanalle jalkojen alla. Se pestään koneessa joka viikko, ja pyöritetään vielä kuivurissa (Mulla kun tuppaa olemaan tämä tiukka allergia sitä tiskirätti-hajua kohtaan - jos vaan tulee sellainen tunnekin, että joku kohde kotona saattaa alkaa haisemaan, se joutuu heti 60 asteen pesuun. Ei poikkeuksia.). Siellä pesussa tämä ihmematto tuntuu paranevan kerta kerralta.

Ja - eikö nämä nyt ole vain kauniita? Novita tuubi, jossa on 50% kierrätyspuuvillaa, on täydellistä, täydellistä, täydellistä. Pehmeetä mutta vahvaa. Ihan kohta saatavissa tuolta kaupastakin, tällä hetkellä saatavana Knit Hit Kitteinä 3 eri värissä.

Here a few more images from our stand in Formex this fall - we thought it turned out really pretty. And - felt like home ;).

It was also nice to hear that the ethical and sustainable growth principles are finally showing up in the interior world in a larger scale. Many new entrepreneurs in the field found our stand  - almost without exception wanting to know more about the suppliers and the background of the products. There were many new (and old!) exhibitors who were offering locally produced textiles, charity products, beauties made of natural materials and so forth. We know this is a complicated issue, but it feels good to be able to be one of those offering this alternative.

Yes, it was a very good show indeed :).

Tässä vielä muutamia kuvia ständistämme Formexissa - meidän mielestämme ständistä tuli kyllä tosi nätti. Ja todella - oli kuin kotonaan olisi ollut :).

Oli myös todella kiva kuulla, että eettiset ja kestävän kehityksen periaatteet ovat tulossa sisustustrendeihin ihan käytännössä. Monia uusia yrittäjiä kävi osastollamme - lähes poikkeuksetta kysyen tuotteiden alkuperäistä. Lisäksi messuilla oli monia uusia (ja vanhoja!) näytteilleasettajia, joilla oli tarjolla paikallisesti tuotettuja tekstiilejä ja esim. hyväntekeväisyystuotteita. Tämä on haasteellinen ja monimutkainen asia, mutta tuntui hyvältä olla yksi niistä, jotka pystyvät tarjoamaan tämän vaihtoehdon asiakkaille.

Kyllä - oli oikein hyvät messut :).

The past 2 weeks have been a bit hectic, to put it mildly. Just the way I like it, but sometimes it makes me wonder how do the other entrepreneur mommies with 3 kids manage...

The kinda painting-photoshoot-meet-suppliers-in-Istanbul-join-soft-landing-for-daycare-prepare-for-Formex busy. On top of the normal work and everyday life in a house not yet so organized after our move and summer holidays. But our DIY stand and everything else is now on it's way to Formex, the largest interior design show in Scandinavia. Wish me luck :)?

For the coming season I wanted to go Earthy. Browns and greys, and some muted pastels. Hand-made, natural materials etc., the usual story on that front.

Our space is 33 sqm, and we are presenting 4 main brands + 2 smaller ones, together with some Christmas beauties. How to tie it all together? Some planning action from Paulina combined with my thoughts - with a nude wall and white furniture, of course! It will be so pretty. Weranna's kinda furniture, that is, all recycled or reused somehow.

We need a sofa and some sofa tables (our painted cable crates will do this year, as well), we need some travel trunks, we need some tree trunks, we need some ladders and hangers and some pallets. And a table (my family's dining table, nice to hear the kids cry 'but mommy, where do we eat then??')

The sofa frame and the ladders I just had to order from our trusted carpenter at the summer house - he is the best. 

Our wall panels, which were mussel blue last time, needed paint. This was truly a project, as the tone of the paint REALLY is different when the structure of the paint is different - see below. A hint - when you purchase paint with structure, ALWAYS choose a lighter tone than the one you desire to have. Otherwise you might need to do like I did - paint 3 times.

Also our bed side tables from our summer house, painted tree trunks, that is, travelled south. Together with our carpets, and cushions - even my pot holders, which are at the moment fully sold out - they will be there telling the story 'we last'. One thing's for sure - I will feel like at home on that stand ;). 

A few days - and you'll see the outcome - I personally cannot wait ;).

Fall Winter trends 2013-2014 - behind the scenes

Well – it was some time ago I wrote a post ‘Earthygoes city’. Now THIS post could be very well called ‘Earthy returns home’. Especially this season this trend really speaks to me  - hopefully to you, too <3! It feels good to be able to see, as well as feel, the work that has gone into the beautiful pieces we have around us at home.

Back in March we, Paulina and I, were having it all sunny and hot on a Zandvoort beach (you can read the story HERE)  – to come up with Weranna’s summer collection inspiration photos, to show you how we see the selected products.  This sunny and hot July week we have been having it all cool and snowy somewhere in southern Finland – physically sort of back where we started.  They say you don’t know how to learn to make music unless you’ve started in a garage making really bad music with pots and pans. Perhaps the same would go for home décor, as well - if it's starting to look good in a barn, it looks good everywhere ;)?

There was white paint everywhere - even some in places where it was supposed to be. At least on one side (don't look at the ladder too closely ;)). There were also a few thousand flies to cheer us up. And there was also plenty of laughter, stupid jokes (VERY stupid), salt licorice and cold coffee. Heavenly.

In the middle of it all we accomplished some really, really awesome images. As you know, all the products Weranna's represents are soft in forms, even if the material is hard – they make a home feel comfy. Again it feels like the best images, which really capture the essence of Weranna’s Warehouse, are those which were brainstormed on the spot – looking around, seeing the material available right there right at that moment. And ideas start flowing and they keep coming, and coming….and coming.

You don’t see my favorites just yet – we’ll need to get organized first.

We are almost done with the Weranna’s home page, as well – combining the different elements of Weranna’s. Our target is to publish the site before we head for Formex August 15-18 in Stockholm. Keep your thumbs up :)!

Do diid – joku aika sitten tuossa keväällä kirjoitin otsikolla ‘Maanläheinen matkaa kaupunkiin’ tai jotain sellaista. Tämän postauksen nimi voisi hyvin olla ‘Maanläheinen palaa kotiin’. Varsinkin juuri nyt tämä tyyli todella puhuttelee – toivottavasti sinuakin? Suositaan käsintehtyä, ja annetaan kodin tekevissä elementeissä näkyä ja tuntua (ja välillä myöskin kuulua) se valtava työ, joka niiden luomiseen vaaditaan.

Maaliskuussa fiilisteltiin Paulinan kanssa kuumaa ja aurinkoista säätä Hollannin Zandvoortin rannoilla (voit lukea tarinan TÄÄLTÄ), jotta saatiin kerrottua niistä kuvista, joita mielessä liikkui Weranna’sin kesätuotteita valitessa.

Tänä kuumana ja aurinkoisena heinäkuun viikkona ollaan oltu ihan kylmissä ja lumisissakin tunnelmissa jossain eteläisessä Suomessa – ikäänkuin takaisin siellä, mistä aloitettiin. Joku sanoi, että opit tekemään musiikkia vasta, kun olet soittanut kammottavaa sellaista autotallissa padat ja kattilat soittimina. Voisiko ajatella, että jos sisustus alkaa näyttämään hyvältä ladossa, se näyttää sitten hyvältä missä vaan ;)?

No, kuten arvata saattaa, valkoista maalia oli vähän joka paikassa. Jopa satunnaisesti siellä, missä sitä piti olla. Ainakin toisella puolella (älkää katsoko noita tikapuita kauheen tarkasti). Meillä oli myöskin kannustusjoukkoina muutama tuhatta kärpästä. Ja kaikkea säesti jatkuva pälpätys, huonot vitsit (TODELLA huonot), monta pussia salmiakkia ja paljon jäähtynyttä kahvia. Ihanaa.

Olen sitä mieltä, että kaiken sen keskellä saimme myös aikaiseksi aivan mahtavia kuvia. Kuten tiedätte, omaa silmääni hivelee eniten reilut tuotteet, joiden muodot ovat pehmeitä – vaikka materiaali olisikin kova. Ja todella näyttää siltä, että parhaat ideat syntyivät taas juuri siinä hetkessä, kun mietittiin, missä tämä tuote olisi juuri paikallaan ja kotonaan. Silloin syntyy sitä omaa jalanjälkeä. Sellaista rentoa, vähän sinnepäin, ehkä jopa kotikutoista. Mutta kauheen mukavan tuntuista.

Lempparijuttuja ei paljastetakaan  ihan vielä – koitetaan vähän ekaksi organisoitua. Mutta ihan kohta.

Olemme puuhanneet tässä myös kovasti Weranna’sin kotisivua, jotta saataisiin koottua yhteen näitä päässä syntyviä ideoita – se saadaan auki toivottavasti ensi viikolla, ennen seuraavalla viikolla starttaavia Formex sisustusmessuja (Formex 15.-18.8.2013 Tukholmassa).  Pitäkäähän peukkuja :)!

Block printing is one of the oldest forms of art, passed on for over 2000 years through traditional artists. In the recent past, the advent of technology has posed a threat to even the mere continuation of this captivating form of art. However, what technology can’t take away or provide is the beauty and purity of block printing. 

Blockwallah, a Finnish-Indian company, brings this ancient art together making it a fun activity for anyone. It also empowers slum women in India by providing them with employment throughout the production process.

Muotilla painaminen on yksi vanhimpia taidemuotoja, joka on siirtynyt eteenpäin yli 2000 vuotta perinnetaiteilijoiden toimesta. Nykyaikainen teknologia uhkaa tietysti myös tätä perinnettä. Mutta mitä teknologia ei voi ottaa pois - se on käsityönä tehdyn painamisen jäljen kauneus ja ainutkertaisuus.

Blockwallah, suomalais-englantilainen yritys, tuo tämän antiikkisen taiteen nykyajan askartelupöytään! Blockwallah tekee läheisesti töitä paikallisten käsityöläisten kanssa Intiassa ja uskoo eettisiin työskentelyperiaatteisiin. Have you already found that old trunk somewhere on the attic, or a second-hand store or a flea-market? Would you paint it, or keep it as it was? 

I've found many of them, and not all of them are painted yet, as it is more complicated than I thought...Some of the treasures I've found actually have the original stamps and seals dating back to 1930's, and it feels strange to be painting over them. Then, on the other hand, I won't have them visible, unless I do paint them, so it's kinda win/loose situation.

An old trunk or a suitcase is perfect for a picnic at the beach - you can carry all the needed stuff in it to the beach and back! Just check the locks first ;) (I didn't). A few pretty linen cushions, some kitchen textiles and accessories...I especially love the scarf-turned-runner made of raw silk! Will be perfect for this summer's cray fish party, as well!

Joko olet löytänyt jonkun vanhan matka-arkun tai matkalaukun ullakolta, tai kirpparilta? Kysymys: maalia päälle, vai alkuperäinen ulkonäkö?

Ajattelin, että tottakai valkoista maalia. Mutta sitten 2 arkkua, jotka löysin kirpparilta, onkin oikeasti arvokkaita...niissä on alkuperäiset leimat ja sinetit 1930-luvun Saksasta. Mitäs nyt? Hankalaa - tiedän, etten käytä niitä sisustuksessa, ellen maalaa, mutta toisaalta tuntuu ihan kreisiltä alkaa sinettejä peittämäänkään. Sellanen win-loose tilanne todellakin.

Mutta siis nuo matka-arkut ja -laukut on aika kätsiä vaikka juhannuspicnicille rannalle - pakkaa vain kaikki kamat arkkuun! Tosin suosittelen ekaksi tsekkaamaan, että lukot pysyvät kiinni (toisin kuin minä). Muutama nätti tyyny, kivat keittiöteksiilit ja lyhty luomaan tunnelmaa, jos vaikka käy niin, että joutuu istumaan vähän pidempään ;). Tuo Kikoin silkkinen huivista-kaitaliina on mun ihan lemppari tänä kesänä - sen avulla saa varmasti tosi kivan rapujuhlakattauksenkin!

Are you a jar/container, person? I am. The whole family is. Actually my husband, who’s family is not a jar family, calls our family THE (ultimate) jar family (this would include my mother, my sister, and me. Grandma used to be quite bad, as well.).

We put everything in jars. Why? Because we don’t want to throw away food. We don’t want the fridge to smell yucky.  And we want the food to taste as good the next days as it did right after it was prepared. 

Which is why I thought it was kinda funny that the book, where Weranna's linen textiles (along with some other items) were used as back ground material, is called ‘In a Jar!’ – ‘Purkissa!’

 I LOVE THIS BOOK by Teresa Välimäki and Johanna Lindholm, who are the two talented, beautiful ladies behind Helsinki Food Company. The instructions are simple and short, and the recipes look like something I could actually manage (at least some of them ;)). AND – the photos are just fantastic. Laura Riihelä is an artist with her camera.

We should be getting the book for sale in our webshop still this week, and I will be sharing one of the recipes with you here in the blog – prepared it all by myself, and succeeded! Think about that ;)! It isn’t every year I succeed with something new from a cook book, you know.

Oletko sinä purkki-ihminen? Mä olen. Oikeastaan koko perhe on. Tunnen suurta sympatiaa Risto Räppääjän Pakastaja-Elviä kohtaan, vaikka olenkin Purkittaja-Pauliina. Mies, jonka perhe ei ole purkkiperhe, kutsuu meitä purkkiperheeksi (ainakin äitiä, siskoa ja minua. Mummi oli kanssa aika paha aikaisemmin).

Me katsokaas laitetaan kaikki purkkeihin ja purnukoihin. Ei haluta heittää ruokaa pois ja on ällöä, jos jääkaappi haisee pahalle. Ja vielä tärkeämpää on, että se ruoka maistuu seuraavina päivinä yhtä hyvältä kuin tuoreena. 

No, tämän (anteeksi liirum laarum) vuoksi oli siis hauska yhteensattuma, kun Weranna’sin tekstiilit oli mukana reseptikirjan kuvauksissa - ja kirjan nimeksi tuli Purkissa!

Tämä kirja, jonka on kirjoittanut Teresa Välimäki ja Johanna Lindholm, kaksi ihanaa daamia Helsinki Food Company:n takana, on ihan LOISTAVA! (Ja jos ette vielä seuraa heidän ruokablogiaan, se löytyy TÄÄLTÄ, tukuttain ideoita arkeen ja juhlaan!) Kirjan säilöntäohjeet ovat ihanan lyhyitä, reseptit  näyttävät sellaisilta, että tekisi mieli kokeilla jokaista. Ketsuppia! Marinadeja! Maustevoita!  Luulen, että jopa minä, keittiöni kuuluisa poropeukalo, onnistun näissä. Ja arvatkaa, mikä on parasta? Tämä kirja menee loppuun asti - ei tyyliin, että marinoi kukkakaalit jääkaappiin. Vaan annetaan tarjoiluehdotuksia ja käyttökohteita niille purnukoiden sisällöille. Loistavaa! 

Ja – KUVAT ovat mielettömän kauniita. Upeita! Laura Riihelä on taiteilija kameransa kanssa.

Meidän pitäisi saada kirja myyntiin verkkokauppaan vielä tällä viikolla, ja ajattelin jakaa sieltä yhden reseptinkin tuossa juhannusaamiaisen yhteydessä. Ihan itse kokeilin…ja onnistuin, ja sitä ei kuulkaa käykään ihan joka vuosi, että onnistun jossain uudessa reseptissä ;)!
