Weranna's Fall Winter 2014-2015 - photoshoot with Paulina Arcklin

The back of Paulina Arcklin's head - as always.

Fall Winter 2014-2015 trends…well, we did our own again. Weranna's style.

Old vintage furniture. Recycled furniture. Talk about innovative use for Hello Kitty hola hoop, for example ;). And Paulina got to use her paintbrush. And also another favorite - DYLON fabric dyes.

Natural materials - mostly wool, alpaca and felt in textiles. Wild olive tree, sesame tree and ceramics for the kitchen and accessories.

Hand-made soaps, all natural ingredients.

Colors - earthy and natural. Mixed with some orchid and pink flavors.

We carried all the stuff you see on the photos into a day-light studio  - 3rd floor in Amsterdam. Oh, and of course before that we had carried them out from 2nd floor apartment in Amsterdam.  Those of you, again, who have done this and know what I'm talking about know that it was one day of sweat and serious exercise. After all the preparations beforehand, that is.

It was also a day of many drinks (it was HOT that day in Amsterdam), delicious salads and tons of candy and nuts. The usual stuff.

We are currently working on the catalogue, and it will be BEAUTIFUL. Almost as beautiful as the new range of products we will be introducing to the store ;).

Stay tuned!

Weranna's Fall/Winter 2014-2015 eCatalgoue will be out soon!

Beautiful Kikoi beaded lanyard key holder - kaunis avain- tai henkilökorttikoru

Kikoi beaded lanyard key ID card holder

http://www.werannas.com/en/ethnic/jewelry/kikoi-keylanyard.html

Here I will let the photos speak for themselves again - no more of those synthetic lanyards around your neck, when you need to have your key and/or ID card available at all times!

These beauties are hand-made in Kenya of natural seeds, paper pearls and all possible hand-made and recycled material - recycled glass, hand-made ceramic and glass beads, recycled metal beads and bone.

The fishing line used holds 4 kg, so you can be sure it holds :).

I recommend!

Suosittelen!

Formex images - Formex trends

Earthy interior trends - Formex fall 2013

Earthy interior trends - Formex fall 2013

Earthy interior trends - Formex fall 2013
Here a few more images from our stand in Formex this fall - we thought it turned out really pretty. And - felt like home ;).

It was also nice to hear that the ethical and sustainable growth principles are finally showing up in the interior world in a larger scale. Many new entrepreneurs in the field found our stand  - almost without exception wanting to know more about the suppliers and the background of the products. There were many new (and old!) exhibitors who were offering locally produced textiles, charity products, beauties made of natural materials and so forth. We know this is a complicated issue, but it feels good to be able to be one of those offering this alternative.

Yes, it was a very good show indeed :).

Formex Fall 2013 - preparing for the show

Fall 2013 trends - Syksy 2013 trendit - building a DIY stand
The past 2 weeks have been a bit hectic, to put it mildly. Just the way I like it, but sometimes it makes me wonder how do the other entrepreneur mommies with 3 kids manage...

The kinda painting-photoshoot-meet-suppliers-in-Istanbul-join-soft-landing-for-daycare-prepare-for-Formex busy. On top of the normal work and everyday life in a house not yet so organized after our move and summer holidays. But our DIY stand and everything else is now on it's way to Formex, the largest interior design show in Scandinavia. Wish me luck :)?

For the coming season I wanted to go Earthy. Browns and greys, and some muted pastels. Hand-made, natural materials etc., the usual story on that front.

Our space is 33 sqm, and we are presenting 4 main brands + 2 smaller ones, together with some Christmas beauties. How to tie it all together? Some planning action from Paulina combined with my thoughts - with a nude wall and white furniture, of course! It will be so pretty. Weranna's kinda furniture, that is, all recycled or reused somehow.

We need a sofa and some sofa tables (our painted cable crates will do this year, as well), we need some travel trunks, we need some tree trunks, we need some ladders and hangers and some pallets. And a table (my family's dining table, nice to hear the kids cry 'but mommy, where do we eat then??')

The sofa frame and the ladders I just had to order from our trusted carpenter at the summer house - he is the best.

Our wall panels, which were mussel blue last time, needed paint. This was truly a project, as the tone of the paint REALLY is different when the structure of the paint is different - see below. A hint - when you purchase paint with structure, ALWAYS choose a lighter tone than the one you desire to have. Otherwise you might need to do like I did - paint 3 times.

Fall 2013 trends - Syksy 2013 trendit - building a DIY stand
Also our bed side tables from our summer house, painted tree trunks, that is, travelled south. Together with our carpets, and cushions - even my pot holders, which are at the moment fully sold out - they will be there telling the story 'we last'. One thing's for sure - I will feel like at home on that stand ;).

A few days - and you'll see the outcome - I personally cannot wait ;).

I'm in love with Kilim carpets, patch-work carpets and other beauties

Kilim carpet restoration

Kilim carpets are just beautiful, aren’t they? There are as many color and pattern combinations as there are Kilims, and I had a chance to meet with some BEAUTIFUL antique pieces.  I spent the end of last week in Istanbul meeting Weranna’s suppliers, and looking for new ones.

Some how I feel that in the Grand Bazaar you always see what’s the biggest thing in the world trends at the moment. Now it feels like it is not only Kilims – it is OLD Kilims. Those which are not so perfect anymore, perhaps they have been fixed by a Kilim doctor ;) (like pictured here), or perhaps the pieces of old Kilim’s have been sown into floor cushions or  new patchwork carpets.

I had the nicest, and the LONGEST chat with one of the carpet sellers. He was upset - telling me about European customers, who want to order their own designs in large quantities, of course using the old Kilim weaving tecniques. When they are told, that sure, but you need to understand that the next delivery might be a little different color, as the yarn is hand-dyed and it is impossible to get the same exact tone 2 times in a row, they say – well, no then, I will order from another country. It’s cheaper anyway. Ahh – okay. This is how far your love for Kilims goes ;). How I just love to talk to these Turkish men with temper – they really make me smile ;).

Kilim carpet restoration

This restoration project I saw from beginning to the end – there was a hole in this old piece I fell in love with, and it was fixed right there, on the spot. First the ‘Kilim doctor’ would remove all the yarn even slightly broken, and replace the warp.

Kilim carpet restoration

See that pile of yarn? Well, there are old Kilims, which just can’t be fixed anymore, so the old yarn is being reused restoring those pieces, which still CAN be fixed. After finding the correct colors, the fast repair takes place – the speed!! The carpet was tightened to a frame (with nails), and after finished, all the ends are cut and BURNED. As everything is 100% wool, you can do that without risk.  In a carpet shop packed with carpets…talk about trust to the material around you…

Kilimit on vaan kauniita, eikö?

Kilimit – eikä vaan Kilimit, vaan VANHAT Kilimit.

My kinda place.

Fall Winter trends 2013-2014 - behind the scenes

Fall Winter trends 2013-2014 - behind the scenes

Well – it was some time ago I wrote a post ‘Earthygoes city’. Now THIS post could be very well called ‘Earthy returns home’. Especially this season this trend really speaks to me  - hopefully to you, too <3! It feels good to be able to see, as well as feel, the work that has gone into the beautiful pieces we have around us at home.

Back in March we, Paulina and I, were having it all sunny and hot on a Zandvoort beach (you can read the story HERE)  – to come up with Weranna’s summer collection inspiration photos, to show you how we see the selected products.  This sunny and hot July week we have been having it all cool and snowy somewhere in southern Finland – physically sort of back where we started.  They say you don’t know how to learn to make music unless you’ve started in a garage making really bad music with pots and pans. Perhaps the same would go for home décor, as well - if it's starting to look good in a barn, it looks good everywhere ;)?

Fall Winter trends 2013-2014 - behind the scenes

There was white paint everywhere - even some in places where it was supposed to be. At least on one side (don't look at the ladder too closely ;)). There were also a few thousand flies to cheer us up. And there was also plenty of laughter, stupid jokes (VERY stupid), salt licorice and cold coffee. Heavenly.

In the middle of it all we accomplished some really, really awesome images. As you know, all the products Weranna's represents are soft in forms, even if the material is hard – they make a home feel comfy. Again it feels like the best images, which really capture the essence of Weranna’s Warehouse, are those which were brainstormed on the spot – looking around, seeing the material available right there right at that moment. And ideas start flowing and they keep coming, and coming….and coming.

You don’t see my favorites just yet – we’ll need to get organized first.

We are almost done with the Weranna’s home page, as well – combining the different elements of Weranna’s. Our target is to publish the site before we head for Formex August 15-18 in Stockholm. Keep your thumbs up :)!

Do diid – joku aika sitten tuossa keväällä kirjoitin otsikolla ‘Maanläheinen matkaa kaupunkiin’ tai jotain sellaista.

DIY cushion covers

Okay...one of those days when the whole blog posts decides to disappear...

I thought to dye some fabric for new cushion covers to our summer house terrace yesterday. Thought really it would be a fast process, but no ;). But don't they look nice? I wanted to use some old sheets that aren't used anymore.

DIY cushion covers

I am no hobbyist even on the field, just wanted to try how it will turn out. I've just looked at the fabrics (worn them more or less all my childhood when living in the far east as a child) , and thought that this is how it must be done. I tried 2 different methods: The first one (above) - I just tied some knots to the sheet with proper thread, and sank the whole thing into the dyeing solutiong. The second (below) - I dipped only the knots to the solution, and quickly, so the color is even lighter. Beginners luck: I think they both look fantastic :)!

If you want to try yourself, don't do like I did, do like I planned to do it....what a mess! Really. After both of the sheets were happily in the washing machine (don't remove the knots!), I poured the whole bucket full of the dark blue dyeing solution down the drain. Looked down, and watched a beautiful blue lake developing at my feet. SHIT!!! The drain was blocked. Doing this in the wash room, there was a nice pink carpet on the floor. Also a pile of clothes waiting to get into the washing machine. You may guess the color of those items currently?

So actually - dyeing itself was very fast and easy - the cleaning job afterwards took some effort....

DIY cushion covers

And - the season is starting - and this wouldn't be Weranna's blog, if there wasn't more flower in the photos :).

The trendiest color of 2013: Monaco blue

http://issuu.com/werannas/docs/werannas_summer

I've beent talking about the major trends of the interior world in the blog, mainly focusing for some weeks now on the rise of the natural colors and materials, which I've named Earthy. Now I will be continuing with some color trends...guess...yes, BLUE!

When Paulina was sending me ideas how to present our summer products at the beach, I immediately loved the idea of a beach tent. No, not one of those plastic/nylon ones that fly away with the wind if you don't carry a bunch of concrete bricks with you - but a real DIY tent. (I also made one of hay poles for the kids last summer, when going mad with the rain, read about it HERE).

In my childhoold we lived many years in Vietnam. We lived on a camp on the coast, close to the port city Haiphong.  During the long summer season, every Sunday we would drive to the Do Son beach and spend the whole day there. 3 small kids from Finland, can't really even think what it COULD'VE done to our skins.

But no...we actually went camping every week! My dad would set up a tent, made of wooden poles and a white sheet, every single time. We had water grass mats under the shade, and there my little brother would take his afternoon nap, the whole family would have lunch or a snack and when it was too hot during noon time, we would all somehow fit under (except my dad, who had the darkest skin for a Finn) and read books or play cards.

After the long day at the beach, we would drive to a certain hotel in town, order lunch (stuffed crab, fried fish) and play in the yard for the next 2 hours to wait for the kitchen to prepare it from fresh ingredients (yes, one time a crab got loose...).

Only later like this, it is amazing to think what our parents did for us when we were little. Let's do the same for our kids, shall we <3?

Earthy Easter inspiration

Hand-decorated Easter eggs

Like I wrote in my previous blog post, the earthy 2013 home decor trend is definitely closest to my heart. Here I translated the trend to Easter. I just absolutely adore these hand-decorated eggs. These are made of real brown eggs, carved and decorated by hand.

Hand-decorated Easter eggs

Hand-made ceramic plate by Petras Lera
Petras Lera Ingrid platter is probably the most beautiful piece of ceramic I have ever seen. And I need to confess - I dropped it on the wooden floor on thursday. Side first. Of course. I closed my eyes and opened them again. I was kind of certain it would be in 2 pieces. NOTHING. Now I don't recommend to be throwing these around the floors like I seem to be doing daily ;), but they are hard, good quality pieces.

En Gry og Sif Easter hen
And of course the Easter hen by En Gry of Sif. My very favorite this year.

My favorite trend 2013 - earthy

Earthy colors, earthy forms, earthy materials, earthy production techniques (=hand-made)...needless to say, it all sounds so Weranna's -like.

I have this corner in our upper floor - it's 'my corner'. That's where I sit (yes, even now) when the kids are playing in their rooms (read: at my feet) or watching kid's channel, and that's where I knit. With good light and a warm blanket (one could say I should blog about spring and summer, but it is SOOO COLD I just cannot give up my Kenana blanket (pictured above) and Samantha Holmes slipper boots just yet).

Anyways - the color of my corner keeps on changing. It's gone from lavender and blue to earthy, to red for Christmas, and now back to earthy.  Cottonhut cushions (available among other resellers at Stilrummet) are my very favorite - these are the use-and-wash type, which are the only option in this family.

My interior magazine basket is leather and from Balmuir, of course, and the hand-woven linen carpet from Cottonhut.

The idea for the crochet garland I got from a Swedish magazine 101 Ideer - there was a wonderful article about Annelie and her hand-made home decor ideas (more in her blog 'Tant brun' http://www.betongsnackor.blogspot.se). I just had to try using Novita's Hanko yarn. Perfect. The pattern is ridiculously easy, and I got my garland done in about 2 hours. Unfortunately I cannot post the instruction here, as I might get into trouble doing so, but you can find one similar at Sarahndipities. Have fun :)!

Paris blues

Feeling blue ;)? Well, to be honest, a little. I've mentioned some time ago that one of our children isn't well, and sometimes, as the symptoms are worse, the little darlings mommy feels VERY blue. But luckily she has her feel-good little business which always brings a smile to her face :).

Last week in Paris - really wasn't feeling the least bit of blue, just saw it everywhere around me! The doors and the store displays...it truly is here, isn't it?

And - visiting the Maison&Objet fair - I was so very proud of the fellow Finnish entrepreneurs displaying their wonderful businesses. Such positivity splash! Such blue and white female energy! You know brands like
Balmuir, Kotonadesign, Iittala...Ahh. Had the best fair ever. Did some Christmas shopping, as well...found a new Dutch supplier. Why always Dutch, I wonder?

As you may guess - it will be lots of blue things this week - thought to have, perhaps, a blue give away (just need to figure out a reason first..;)...) and also give you instructions for a simple simple BLUE crochet work. One of those 40-minutes-and-done projects.

They sky is blue today, and I'm wearing blue, and now need to start preparing for my trip to Finland....byeee my friends....
