Merlin Beach Resort in Phuket, Thailand

Merlin Beach Resort in Phuket, Thailand

Got energized by the warm sun, and the flower power always available in Thailand.

No, our family will never ever go on an organized trip again. And if we do, no way we would go on one of these everything-organized-let's-do-some-sports-in-the-morning-with-the-other-Finns kinda joints.  Except now we did ;)! And enjoyed quite a bit. SO EASY. Took a last minute 2-week trip to Phuket, Thailand after Christmas from Finnmatkat, member of TUI, and stayed in Merlin Beach Resort the whole 2 weeks.

Merlin Beach Resort in Phuket, Thailand

Depending on site, the hotel gets 4-4,5 stars. About 40% of the hotel is TUI guests coming mostly from Scandinavia, Finland, and Germany. The rest from UK and Australia, some from Russia, elsewhere Europe and Japan. At TUI, this is sold as a family resort. Elsewhere, it seemed, more like as a wedding and heavenly hideaway resort. Partly this can be accomplished with 3 large pool areas, out of which 1 is not allowed for children under 12 years of age, but not quite.  The TUI staff was wonderful, they were many, and really wanted to see that our vacation is what we hoped for. The service in the hotel doesn't get 4-4,5 stars, though. It was a bit sad to see actually - Merlin needs to be sort of finding the spirit of Thailand again, going back to the wonderful service and smiles we all travel there for. Some of us again and again.

About Phuket then? Patong is getting very busy. But we enjoyed a great deal eating delicious food, long walks on the hilly roads, some shopping at Jung Ceylon and massage/pedicure/manicure on the beach and all that.

Made some good, new friends and missing them already. A much needed, very much appreciated, wonderful holiday overall.

Best places to visit in Finland - Kenkävero

Best places to visit in Finland - Kenkävero

We participated the Kenkävero night event yesterday (in Mikkeli, Finland). It was just beautiful. So beautiful that it made me cry. All put together by wonderful, talented, friendly staff, perfect surroundings and a winter day.

I'll let the photos speak to themselves. If you visit Finland and heading north on road 5, this is a must for lunch, coffee and some feel-good shopping.

Kenana Knitters - changing lives stitch by stitch

Kenana Knitters

Ms. Patricia Nightingale, a beautiful, kind and talented lady - the founder of Kenana Knitters which is a grassroots business that was founded by local Kenyan, Patricia Nightingale, who wanted to assist a group of individuals, as they were lacking a market for their homespun yarn.

With clever consideration, she helped transform their yarn into unique creations with her distinctive designs, including plush toys, home décor, clothing and accessories. With a vision to further impact the community, the group taught women in the area to knit beautiful, organic products using local, sustainable resources. By providing a safe, family-friendly working environment, Kenana Knitters empowers women, offering them a chance to work and take charge of their lives, with dignity.

The women are allowed to work from home, or they gather at the Kenana Knitters workshop and do the needed spinning, knitting or weaving there. They may even bring their children with them.

Kenana also supports women and girls, who might be disabled, for finding less demanding tasks for them to do.

We visited Kenana farm last week, arrived a bit late Friday afternoon due to some problems with the traffic in Nairobi (this doesn't tell anything about it really ;)), and didn't have a chance to see the women at work. But we saw the garden (the board meeting room, that is), we saw the container (the office, that is) and we saw the warehouse (some more containers, that is). We talked for hours with Patricia, learning about the project, and their way of life in rural Kenya. We stayed in one of their beautiful, unique guesthouses (you can learn more about the guest houses at www.kembu.com) built and designed by Andrew, Patricia's son. Had a wonderful dinner prepared by Isaac (we even asked for the Ginger-Carrot soup recipe, will be in the blog during the weekend). The nights are cool, as the farm is around 2000 m above the sea level, and they are also DARK. No difference whether you have your eyes closed or shut ;).

Everything is so wonderfully, peacefully down to earth, and yet they have everything they need.  This project is 100% what I believe in - women helping themselves with their own hands, learning a new skill, becoming good at it and supporting their family locally, with locally purchased materials. And passing the talent forward to others around them. And this project, in turn, is already able to support the local orphanage.

If you wish to purchase any Kenana products to show your support, please visit our shop at www.werannas.com. Please contact us at info(@)werannas.com, if you wish to become a reseller for the products.

Kikoi trading - we take care of the faces behind the products

Triangle market, Nairobi, Kenya

First of all: I want to thank Maijakaisa, the owner of Kikoi Trading, from the bottom of my heart, for joining me on my first trip to Kenya. First to Africa actually. I saw HER Kenya, and I’ve fallen in love already.

We spent hours on Thursday in Triangle market, a small handicraft market in Nairobi, where the artisans sell their work. Some of them were making the products right there, some of them make them during the evenings, some of them gather a group of women and make them together (I even met the Picasso of Africa ;), or at least he introduced himself as such. And I mean - who wouldn’t support Picasso by buying some of his work, if he comes to you in a market in Nairobi??).

This place is where some of Kikoi’s products are originally from, and I truly can sign Kikoi’s statement – we take care of the faces (and hands, one could add) behind our products. Wonderful, just beautiful women. Funny, smily….and when I ask to take a photo, they get all serious J!! When the others see Maija making orders in number of stalls she has made business with also before, they wait patiently, and then call ‘Sista, please come inside and take a look at my products, as well!’

We passed by Westgate shopping mall a couple of times, where the terrible things took place just couple of weeks back. The roads were blocked and there is the army and the police everywhere in the city center, their machine guns visible. You wouldn't want to mess with these people.

On our way back to Maija’s friend’s house, where we were staying before hitting the road for Kenana Knitter Critters in Njoro, we stopped to buy some flowers and to meet Robert, the talented man behind Kikoi’s banana tree products. We ordered some of new products, let’s see what he comes up with J.

After having a quick dinner we were back at the house – and met the most hilarious people on earth – the owners of Simbaexperience.fi, a Finnish travel agency organizing tailored trips to Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. I don’t remember laughing out loud like that for a long, long time! And and and – we were offered some dinner company AND a Night Safari in the Nairobi national park on Saturday evening before my flight back home (more about this later).  What all you can fit into 3 days when you happen to be in right places at right times…Below what I thought would be my Safari experience ;).

I'm in love with Kilim carpets, patch-work carpets and other beauties

Kilim carpet restoration

Kilim carpets are just beautiful, aren’t they? There are as many color and pattern combinations as there are Kilims, and I had a chance to meet with some BEAUTIFUL antique pieces.  I spent the end of last week in Istanbul meeting Weranna’s suppliers, and looking for new ones.

Some how I feel that in the Grand Bazaar you always see what’s the biggest thing in the world trends at the moment. Now it feels like it is not only Kilims – it is OLD Kilims. Those which are not so perfect anymore, perhaps they have been fixed by a Kilim doctor ;) (like pictured here), or perhaps the pieces of old Kilim’s have been sown into floor cushions or  new patchwork carpets.

I had the nicest, and the LONGEST chat with one of the carpet sellers. He was upset - telling me about European customers, who want to order their own designs in large quantities, of course using the old Kilim weaving tecniques. When they are told, that sure, but you need to understand that the next delivery might be a little different color, as the yarn is hand-dyed and it is impossible to get the same exact tone 2 times in a row, they say – well, no then, I will order from another country. It’s cheaper anyway. Ahh – okay. This is how far your love for Kilims goes ;). How I just love to talk to these Turkish men with temper – they really make me smile ;).

Kilim carpet restoration

This restoration project I saw from beginning to the end – there was a hole in this old piece I fell in love with, and it was fixed right there, on the spot. First the ‘Kilim doctor’ would remove all the yarn even slightly broken, and replace the warp.

Kilim carpet restoration

See that pile of yarn? Well, there are old Kilims, which just can’t be fixed anymore, so the old yarn is being reused restoring those pieces, which still CAN be fixed. After finding the correct colors, the fast repair takes place – the speed!! The carpet was tightened to a frame (with nails), and after finished, all the ends are cut and BURNED. As everything is 100% wool, you can do that without risk.  In a carpet shop packed with carpets…talk about trust to the material around you…

Kilimit on vaan kauniita, eikö?

Kilimit – eikä vaan Kilimit, vaan VANHAT Kilimit.

My kinda place.

Sunday breakfast

Sunday breakfast

Have you visited Istanbul during the summer? Right after the sun has come up, you start feeling the heat radiating from the walls.

Sunday breakfast

You open the shutters - and let the sun, the light morning breeze and the delicious scent of the fruit trees fill the room. Someone special may bring you breakfast in bed. After she/he has picked up some fresh bread, croissants or Simits from the local bakery.

Sunday breakfast

Or you do like many do - Sunday might be your only whole day off, and you head with them to one of the numerous café's along the Bosporus.

Or you wander with them to one of the cool spots of the city - the green parks of Istanbul. Eating a brunch, barbecuing, playing board games, and having a nap. And, of course, drinking many cups of tea. Smiling, relaxing, and enjoying your free life.

The beautiful, wonderful, warm, sunny, friendly Istanbul. Just like the people of Turkey. My heart is with you.

***

Kuten asukkaansa. Sydämeni on luonanne.

Let it snow...

We sure have got our share of snow during the past week...beautiful, just beautiful...

Even right now, looking out the window from the corner of our couch (where I am spending the day with a little one who is sick, the winter season has REALLY started ;) ), it is snowing. It really looks like we are getting the always wished white Christmas...<3

These photos I took in Skogsbo gård last week - I really can recommend ANYONE wanting a moment away from the busy every day life to drop by and enjoy a cup of tea...the atmosphere in this place is amazingly calm. LOVE the place.

Positive Energy splash from Skogsbo Trädgårdscafe

Skogsbo gård, Bromma, Sweden

On Saturday I visited a summer wonderland - Skogsbo Gård in Skogsbo Bromma (more coordinates: Stockholm, Sweden ;)). Did you write that down? If you didn't, DO!

Skogsbo gård, Bromma, Sweden

The project that has been started only this year, and already is offering us the positive energy splash seen on their Facebook page and here, is just wonderful! It is such an interesting project that I will be following it in my blog closely, how an old old villa by a lake turns into a cafe-yoga-interior-design feel-good haven - enjoy the outdoor photos for now my beautiful readers ;). And be sure to visit Skogsbo when in Stockholm - It is absolutely gorgeous!

Yes - I especially liked the chairs... ;)
